"The really high-end visualizations are still in the aerospace industry. I'm not sure anyone in life sciences is really doing that kind of work. For modeling an airplane or the space shuttle, there are tremendous numbers of equations, points that need to be sampled. That requires large workstations, multiple gigs of RAM, multiple CPUs. For the visualizations in the life sciences, we are nowhere near needing that yet."

"Visualization is a tool that allows you to see the end result of computation, to steer the computation, and even to go back to the beginning with the raw data, to get a sense of where it should go. You keep mentioning visualization, and I keep trying to push you back to the analysis of the visualization. My definition of visualization is that it's an interface to the data and the algorithm."

Bioinformatics will be at the core of biology in the 21st century. In fields ranging from structural biology to genomics to biomedical imaging, ready access to data and analytical tools are fundamentally changing the way investigators in the life sciences conduct research and approach problems. Complex, computationally intensive biological problems are now being addressed and promise to significantly advance our understanding of biology and medicine. No biological discipline will be unaffected by these technological breakthroughs.
